THE METS IN THE FUTURE
My name is Dana Brand and I've written
a book called
Mets Fan.

My book is for all of us.

I write about why we are Mets fans and why we
are
not Yankee fans.

I write about what the players mean to us.

I write about the good years and the bad years.

I write about what we feel when we
go to Citifield, and see Mr. Met, when we
see our logo, sing our song, or cheer for
our team.

I write about what we feel when we bring our kids
to a
game.  Or when we watch the most important
games in Mets history with the people we love.

I write about what the Mets are in our lives, about
how beautiful baseball is and how wonderful,
exciting, sad, and horrible it can be.

I am a Professor of English and American
Literature at Hofstra University.  I got my Ph.D.
from Yale where I studied with A. Bartlett
Giamatti, with whom I often discussed baseball.

Don’t worry.   I’m not going to compare Jerry
Manuel to Captain Ahab.

But I want to offer you and other Mets fans the
kind of book about the Mets you deserve.

You deserve something better than the dopey
books that get thrown together
for people who can’t think of what to
buy somebody for Father’s Day.

You deserve a book that's well-written and funny.

My book has 81 short pieces about different
aspects of being a Mets fan.

It explains what it is actually like to bleed blue and
orange.

You will understand me and I hope that fans of all
baseball teams will be able to understand what I
am writing about.

Please take a look at my sample pieces and please
take a look at the table of contents to the right.  If
you'd like to know about my media appearances,
readings, book signings, etc. please keep checking
back here, or put your e-mail address on my

mailing list

For a while, I had a guestbook, but I had to close it
because of spambots.  If you want to see what
people said about my sample pieces before I had
to close up, please check out my
guestbook

Enjoy.  Thank you for visiting my site.  Please tell
your friends about it.  And LETS GO METS!

(Click on the links to read the entire review.)

From Mark Herrmann in Newsday:
"A happy book ... a labor of love.... If you're a
Mets fan, you know what he's talking about."

From Matt Cerrone of Mets Blog:
"Dana’s book is a must read, and will make a
great holiday gift…(the) essays are equal parts
nostalgia, comedy and insight."

From The Sports Collector's Digest:
"Great baseball writing that will delight Mets
fans and everyone who enjoys baseball."

From Mark Healey of Gotham Baseball
Magazine:  "If you are a Mets fan, buy this
book.  Buy it for other Mets fans.  Share it with
any Met fan you meet in the street, in a bar, or at
the ballpark.  It's that good of a read."

From Greg Prince at Faith and Fear in
Flushing:This is a book for us. It's a book for
Mets fans. It's a book we deserve. It's a book we
will absorb through our pores. This is our book.
It's about time we got one like this…Dana Brand
is an authentic Mets fan and an authentic
wordsmith."

From Anthony De Rosa at Hotfoot
"I have not been able to put it down.  Dana
Brand's book "Mets Fan" is a great, heartfelt
collection of essays on the things that matter most
to Mets Fans."

From Mike Steffanos at Mike's Mets:
“[Mets Fan]  has received universal praise
around the Mets blogosphere.   A terrific book …
smart and well-written, … but also accessible
and real. Dana speaks to the simple truths of
what it means to be a fan of this amazin' club. In
writing about his own experience he touches on
things that are universal to most of us.  He
speaks to feelings that only true Mets fans can
understand.”

From Jason Maoz at The Jewish Press:
"The best exploration yet written about what it
means to be a Mets fan."

From Steve Keane of The Eddie Kranepool
Society:  "Dana Brand has written THE book
about us Mets fans and it should be mandatory in
any Mets fan's library."

From Dan Ziegler of Lone Star Mets
"I keep reading the great Dana Brand's genius,
that I believe defines all real Mets fans."

Ralph McIntyre in Aethlon: The Journal of
Sports Literature:  "The prose ... soars, [it is]
lyrically satisfying and splendidly cadenced ... it
glows with the warmth of classic baseball writing.
...The essays are witty, brief, and cutting with a
Seinfeld-esque feel ...This is not sportswriting but
rather the exploration into the import of what
happens to a person who becomes a fan, the
psychology of loyalty, the necessary balance that
it requires between praise and criticism, and
most endearingly here, the savage cut of
disappointment, the telling of which is always
more fascinating than tales of championship
seasons and Hall of Fame players.  This is a
wonderful read - a tonic revelation of ... how in
the end the fan is something higher and finer
than those who simply follow sports."

The story of METS FAN
began On August 28, 2005,
when I published a column
in
Newsday entitled "If You
Prick A Mets Fan, He
Bleeds Blue and Orange."
The column was an
enormous hit with Mets
fans and was posted on
over 20 Mets blogs and
linked to by many
publications.  Its success
convinced me that the
world was ready for an
ENTIRE BOOK about being
a Mets fan.

The Citi Field Bookshelf

Mets fans are literate people and they don't have enough good books to read.  To do
what I can to encourage good books about the Mets, I'm going to be listing links to
what I think are good recent books about the Mets.  The links are to websites, but I will
eventually put up reviews as well.  I will rename this feature as soon as I learn that they
will be selling Mets books at Citi Field.  The books are listed alphabetically by author.
